News Release - Team Alberta Challenge

Team Alberta Challenge in May, 2007

RED DEER, AB – Hockey Alberta will be running the first Team Alberta Challenge May 10-13, 2007 in Lloydminster, AB. This is an additional Under 16 female program designed to provide an opportunity for athlete evaluation and development in years the Alberta Winter Games does not run.

The Team Alberta Challenge was created to provide development in much the same way the Alberta Cup works for the U16 male program. Hockey Alberta has developed a competition where zone teams compete against each other in a tournament while at the same time athletes, coaches, referees, trainer and director of operations are evaluated to continue in the U16 development path. It provides all players, coaches, trainers and referees an equal opportunity to discover the great qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized and fair Zone Camp and Select Team competition.

The Zone Camps (one in each of the six zones) running March 23-25 or March 30 – April 1, are designed to give all players, coaches, and trainers an equal opportunity to show their skills as well as receive top level instruction and evaluation from quality people identified by Hockey Alberta. As part of the program an emphasis is also placed on the development and identification of Alberta’s best hockey people, who might have an opportunity to represent Alberta at future national or international events.

The program goals are dedicated to providing opportunities for athletes to strive for excellence; ensure the development of self-esteem and skill enhancement while promoting fair play and fun in a safe environment. To achieve this there have been several program objectives laid out:

  • Provide all female participants in the identified age group, an opportunity to be a part of a female Team Alberta Challenge Program through open applications and consistent communications.
  • Begin a structure for a consistent athlete evaluation and development process to the Under 16 Provincial Program and Under 18 Program.
  • Ensure an educational and positive development experience for all participants involved through care and attention to quality and fairness.

Facilitate a unique, competitive, development experience for the purpose of identifying and training the best athletes, coaches, referees, trainers and director of operations.

The Team Alberta Challenge will provide a consistent flow of evaluation and development for U16 athletes on their way through the U16 program and into the U18 program.
